Cat cold: dangerous for the house tiger

Cat cold should never be compared to a mild cold in humans. It is a dangerous disease that may even be fatal. Young cats and old animals with a weakened immune system are particularly at risk. Image: Shutterstock / Lukas Skarits

With such a dangerous disease, it is important to correctly interpret the first symptoms to prevent the worst. A number of pathogens can be responsible for the infection, bacteria and viruses are the most common causes. Even if your house tiger has no contact with other members of the same species, it can become infected with objects or clothing that an infected animal has touched.

How you can recognize cat sniffing

Cat runny nose manifests itself through watery, later also slimy discharge from the nose and eyes. Your cat is forced to breathe through the mouth and has difficulty swallowing, which results in decreased appetite. The oral mucosa often becomes inflamed; in severe cases ulcers form under the tongue or on the eyes. Severe cat colds can also cause bone loss in the turbinate.

Sick cats often have additional fever and pain in the muscles, which can lead to listlessness and fatigue. Cat cold is usually not life-threatening for healthy adult cats, but unfortunately it is for kittens, seniors and chronically ill room tigers. After surviving the disease, the pathogen often remains in the organism; Even if he "sleeps" and no symptoms appear, the affected cat can infect other members of the same species. Long-term damage, such as blindness or chronic inflammation of the nose, can result from cat runny nose.

Precautionary measures and therapy of the disease

It is best to have kitten vaccinated properly - then cat sniffing can be completely prevented. In the eighth, twelfth and 16th weeks and later once a year you should have your cat vaccinated. This makes the main pathogens such as herpes viruses or the calicivirus harmless. If the disease does break out, you should immediately consult a veterinarian.

This often prescribes antibiotics that you can chop into the cat's food. However, they only make sense if a bacterial infection has been added to the virus infection, since antibiotics do not work against viruses. In addition, the veterinarian can prescribe dietary supplements and medications that strengthen the immune system and help it fight the pathogen. If your cat is too weak from the infection to eat and drink, it needs an infusion. Your vet can advise you on how to do this.

When you get back home, you should always keep the sick cat's eyes and nose clean to make breathing easier. Your cat needs it warm now; therefore make sure you have the right place to sleep. You should avoid drafts if possible. Since your sick cat is still contagious, you should keep it separate from other animals in the multi-cat household. This is especially true if the other cats are still unvaccinated, very young, very old or chronically ill.

Prognosis after an infection with cat runny nose

Treated early, cat cold usually heals completely, especially if the cat is already fully grown and is otherwise fit and healthy. In very young kittens, the disease can be fatal or lead to significant long-term damage. Cats with a weakened immune system are also at risk. Unfortunately, they are sometimes too weak to be vaccinated. It is therefore very important that all animals in the multi-cat household and in a breed that can be vaccinated are also vaccinated regularly. In this way, a so-called herd immunity arises - the vaccinated animals stay healthy and cannot infect their roommates, so that they also remain free of cat colds.
